Deep inside the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard, Norwegian miners have worked seams of ultra-pure anthracite for over a century. Gruvebus takes its name—and its toughness—from that legacy.

  • Quenched mining-grade steel – the 40 mm case is fired with high-carbon anthracite from Svalbard’s Mine 7, then salt-quenched, boosting hardness from about 192 HV to 224 HV (≈ 17 % harder than standard 316 L) for better scratch and impact resistance.

  • Always-on glow – Swiss Trigalight GTLS tubes in the hands and hour markers emit a steady green-blue light for 25 years, backed up by a burst of Swiss Super-LumiNova when you step from sun to shaft.

  • Coal-textured dial – an exact 3D impression of raw coal is pressed into the brass dial, sealed under three layers of clear lacquer so it feels smooth but looks rugged.

Case-back tribute – a deep relief of the load-bearing miner from Longyearbyen’s iconic Gruvebus statue—reproduced with permission from sculptor Tore Bjørn Skjølsvik—honours the men and women who move mountains underground.

Only 350 pieces of the green dial will ever be made – each with an individually numbered caseback. A unique piece of Arctic industrial history – captured in a timepiece.

Built for Darkness – Born in the Mine.

The Gruvebus watch is an Arctic monument in time-piece form, engineered to withstand the very darkness that inspired it. Swiss GTLS tritium tubes in the hands and hour markers emit a constant glow, while Swiss Super-LumiNova bursts to life when you move from light to shadow.

The dial bears a pattern taken from a coal fragment we found in Mine 3—an exact impression pressed into the plate to capture the raw texture of the bedrock beneath Longyearbyen—then sealed under three layers of clear lacquer to give a perfectly smooth surface for the markers and luminous tubes

The Gruvebus Statue – A Greeting from the Arctic

The caseback carries a deep relief depicting an interpretation of the Gruvebus statue in Longyearbyen – reproduced with permission from the artist Tore Bjørn Skjølsvik – as a tribute to the miners who shaped the town. Each model is individually numbered and produced in strictly limited quantities: 350 pieces with a black dial, 300 with white, and only 175 with blue and green dials.

At its core beats an swiss automatic Sellita SW200 movement, ensuring reliable precision.

Black Gold That Makes Steel Stronger

Arctic anthracite is sought after for its ultra-low sulphur, high energy output and near-pure carbon content. Its steady, oxygen-lean flame is perfect for steelmaking, casting moulds and any application that needs scale-free heat and a clean finish.

For the Gruvebus watch we fire our forge with coal from Mine 7—up to 98 % fixed carbon, the same fuel that chemical giant Clariant has trusted for four decades in premium pigments and automotive catalysts. We use it in both the casting moulds and the forge itself. The stable, low-oxygen flame lets us heat 316 L steel to about 870 °C without creating surface scale, then snap-quench it in a salt bath. Hardness climbs from roughly 192 HV to 224 HV—about 17 % harder—delivering noticeably better scratch and impact resistance than ordinary 316 L stainless steel.
